Can You Wash Shredded Memory Foam Pillows? Check the Inner Pillow

Diagram separating an adjustable pillow’s outer cover, inner shell, and loose foam fill.

Some shredded memory foam pillows can be machine washed; others cannot. The deciding factor is the care instruction for the inner pillow, not the fact that the foam is cut into pieces. A washable cover does not make the fill washable.

Before you put anything in water, find the exact model and identify its components. An adjustable pillow may have an outer cover, an inner zippered shell, and loose fill. Instructions for one layer do not automatically apply to the others.

What the manufacturers actually allow

This comparison brings together care instructions that do not support one universal answer. It is a documentary comparison, not a wash test. Your pillow’s own label takes priority, especially if its model or construction has changed.

Model or product Outer cover Inner pillow
Coop Original and Eden Cold, delicate wash; low tumble dry. Coop permits cold, delicate washing with the zipper secured, followed by low tumble drying until completely dry.
Coop Cool+ Cold, gentle wash; low tumble dry. Spot-clean the foam with mild detergent and limited water, then air dry. Do not borrow Original/Eden instructions.
SpineAlign Original Use and wash a separate pillowcase according to its label. No washer or dryer. Spot-clean with mild soap and water; air dry completely. Its stated fill is shredded polyurethane foam, not specifically identified as memory foam.
Tempur-Pedic pillows, general U.S. care FAQ Removable covers: cold wash with mild detergent; hang dry. The FAQ says TEMPUR material is not washable. This is a broader foam comparison, not evidence that every Tempur product is shredded.

Find the instruction for the part you want to clean

Look for separate labels on the outer cover and inner shell. Match the model name to the manufacturer’s current care page; a general article about memory foam is not a substitute. If a label says only that the cover is washable, leave the insert out of the washer.

If the label and website disagree, ask the manufacturer which instruction applies to your version before washing the insert. Useful details are the model name, approximate purchase date, and a photo of the label. You do not need to guess based on another pillow from the same brand.

Three care paths for a pillow insert: machine washable, spot-clean only, or unknown instructions.
Identify the component first. An unknown insert instruction is a reason to check—not permission to machine wash.

If machine washing is expressly allowed

Follow the wash and drying instructions as a pair. Being able to get an insert wet is only half the job; you also need an approved way to dry the fill throughout.

For Coop Original and Eden, the manufacturer says to remove the outer cover, secure the inner zipper with a safety pin, use cold water on a delicate cycle, and avoid bleach and fabric softener. For drying, it specifies one pillow at a time on low heat. Several cycles may be needed; Coop says to check inside with your hand for remaining moisture. These are model-specific directions, not a recipe for all shredded foam.

Do not empty loose foam directly into a washing machine. The opening used to adjust the fill is not necessarily an instruction to wash that fill separately. Keep the construction intact unless your model’s care instructions explicitly tell you otherwise.

If the insert is spot-clean only

Use the model’s own spot-cleaning directions. Do not turn “spot-clean” into soaking the entire pillow in a sink. Likewise, a low dryer setting is not automatically safe: SpineAlign expressly excludes the dryer, while Coop’s Cool+ instructions call for air drying after spot cleaning.

A removable cover can often be cleaned separately, but its label still governs the temperature and drying method. A pillowcase over the cover is another washable layer; keep it on its own care routine rather than treating every small mark as a reason to wet the foam.

No label, or still damp after cleaning?

If you cannot identify the pillow or confirm an insert-cleaning method, wash only a separate case or a cover with its own clear instructions. Contact the maker before treating the foam. “It looks like my old washable pillow” is not enough to choose a cycle.

After an approved wash or spot clean, do not put the pillow back into its cover while the fill remains damp. Do not raise the heat beyond the allowed setting to make it finish faster. If moisture or an unpleasant odor persists and the approved process does not resolve it, ask the manufacturer about the next step. Scented spray does not establish that the inside is dry.
